Born and raised in Sunnyside, NY, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Rose McNulty Mattson of Sunnyside. She attended Saint Theresa Catholic School in Woodside, followed by Saint Jean Baptist Catholic High School in Manhattan.. The Mattson family were devoted members of Queen of Angels Church, where they enjoyed time with their neighborhood friends. Maureen met her husband on a blind date at a dance at Saint Vincent Ferrer Church in Manhattan and were married in Queen of Angels in 1967.
In 1973, Maureen and Gene moved to Westport, CT to raise their family of three young children. She was a loving and active mother and participated in all of events, especially as a soccer- mom, band-mom. She hosted numerous fun pool parties at their Harding Lane home and was tireless in her dedication to catching up with the kids' friends over a cup of tea and always sharing a funny story. She had a wonderful dry wit and a warm and engaging smile that everyone was drawn to.
During her time in Westport, Maureen worked as an Executive Assistant for Marketing Corporation of America on Saugatuck Avenue in Westport and then earned a B.A. from Marymount College and a Masters in Literature from Fordham University. Additionally, she worked as a teacher at the Katherine Gibbs School. Maureen was an avid reader and had a great thirst for knowledge. She enjoyed skiing with family at Okemo Mountain, where they had a slope-side condo, and boating with friends in Bonita Springs, Florida where they lived during the winter months from 1995 to 2008. She also enjoyed theater, cooking, tennis, bridge and travel, particularly to Kinsale, Ireland where her youngest daughter's family lived for a few years.
