Meg and family, I have not seen you since Meghan Tully's wedding and I am sorry that I did not know of the burden your son carried, with what sounds like such dignity and grace. Those who carry the burden of illness and addiction teach us so much about life. I hope you will see your son in the flight of birds. You will feel him in the spring breeze. You will know his spirit never is really gone and will be in your heart, always. And you in his. May you feel him around and near you from time to time. May you know he is safe, loved and happy. And may you find a way to think of him with joy and light. I found the following prayer in my mom's room when she passed. She suffered bipolar.
"I'm Free": Don't grieve for me, for now, I am free. I am following the path god laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and I left it all. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or to play. Tasks undone must stay that way. I found the peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, then fill it up with remembered joy. A friendship shared; a laugh, a kiss. Oh, yes these things I will miss. Be not bothered with times of sorrow. My life's been full, I savored much. Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me. God wanted me now, he set me free. ( unknown author)

You don't know me but please accept my prayers and condolences on the loss of your son. Addiction robbed you of a long life with your son Chris. Our family went through years and years of addiction with my brother who finally lost the battle with himself when he was just 34 years old in 1992 after many treatments and relapses. Addiction is a horrible disease and more needs to be done to prevent any more losses such as Chris and my brother Peter. I hope you find some solace in remembering the good times and find peace and support with your loved ones. God bless you.

Dear Meg and Rick
Words cannot express the profound sadness and grief that our family is feeling today. We are hear broken.
Our only comfort are the wonderful memories we have of Chris as a young boy playing hockey and lacrosse with Michael to the years at Prep playing sports and all dressed up for prom. Chris lit up our house every time he walked in. He was incredibly funny and made us al laugh. Chris was always a gentleman and so polite and kind.
We have so many great memories of long trips in the car to hockey and lacrosse tournaments. Chris made us laugh the whole way.
Chris will always remain in our hearts, our cherished memories and our hearts forever.
Michael will especially feel this loss forever.
We loved Chris. We will always love him.

You have shown so much class and dignity in reporting the cause of your son's death. Twenty-five years ago when we lost our 31 year old young son from addiction to illegal drugs this was something that was not discussed in polite society. I began a crusade in my town to talk about it and show unconditional love, hoping to help remove the stigma. I was a voice in the wilderness for many years and am so encouraged every time I see other family members honestly speak of their loved ones who have died from this scourge. I see no point in protecting the problem to avoid unkind people from making mean spirited comments. My sincere condolences and empathy.

Meg, Rick, Kelly, Kara, and Casey,
I am so heartbroken to hear of Chris' passing, and hurting deeply for you, I cannot even begin to comprehend what you're going through. Though Chris and I hadn't spoken in several years, the name "Chris McEttrick" has brought a smile to my face and my heart whenever I heard it - I am pretty sure he's who my very first crush was, as a little kid, when we would all get together. I continued to think of him as the coolest kid around, and for a while in junior high we emailed back and forth and saw each other once during our college years. As you have said, he was always kind, good-humored, and compassionate. The world is less without him.
Much love,

Hello. My name is Jeff. I had the pleasure, and fun of coaching the boys Wakeman LaCrosse team with Chris last Summer. I did not know Chris very well, but I liked him very much. It was clear to me and to he team that Chris was a great athlete and coach. I relied on Chris to provide the team with strong coaching skills, techniques and on field skills.
I had a lot of fun coaching with Chris and I know all of the boys liked him very much and looked up to him. It was obvious that as a Coach and as a friend, that Chris cared very much about the team and the boys.
I write this message in a bit of disbelief as I had been looking forward to seeing Chris again this coming LaCrosse season at Wakeman. I wanted to express my sincere sympathy to all of the family. I am very glad for the brief time I was able to spend with Chris. I wish only for peace now for Chris and his entire family. In Heaven, may Chris find peace and freedom and the opportunity to continue being a coach as it was something he was great at. Thank you.

Dear Meg, and Rick: The Disease of Alcoholism and Addiction is SO cruel. If it does not take our/my Life, it progressively makes our/my Life increasingly progressively miserable: Spiritually, Emotionally, AND Physically...and the Disease NEVER goes away...It is only thru Grace that it is kept in remission one day at a time...We/I fall down, but thru Grace We/I may get back up..For me, his IS the Spiritual Journey..with every fall..every ending..there is a New Beginning...when we/I get back up
And, for me, EVERY fall, every bottom, every ENDING has a New Beginning if only we/I see it and know it and feel it....Experience it..
AND so it is also true for me, and may I suggest, that every Final Ending gives rise to the most beautiful and wonderful NEW BEGINNING...that anyone ever Finally experiences..and Forever...
May I also suggest, and please forgive me in your moment of unbelievable Grief and Sadness to make any suggestion(s) , that you obtain and read at your 1st convenience the book "To Heaven and Back": by Dr. Mary C. Neal who wrote of her death and what happened to her..and what she experienced. She was featured in a CNN special with 2 others about this same experience....
I believe that is is possible that the experience she had and the most beautifully and precise manner in which she conveys it to the rest of us/YOU may bring a few Tears of Joy to at least mix with the Tears of Grief and Sadness you are going thru now.. Blessings and Prayers..
