Obituary of Ernest Cook
Please share a memory of Ernest to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ernest Cook, age 98, of Easton, beloved husband of his "Dear Heart" Irene Haydu Cook, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 31, 2018.
Born in Bridgeport, Ernest was the son of Joseph and Jennie Wargo Cook, and made Easton his home, "kis erdo" (little woods) for 53 years. He served in the United States Army during World War II and loved "The Grand Old Flag". Returning to civilian life, Ernest established his business, Cook Sign Sales. His customers liked to refer to him as Leonardo de Vinci. A man of strong faith, he belived "Love is not something you keep. You have to share it".
He was proud of his Hungarian heritage and enjoyed szalonna sutes picnics with family and friends. Ernest took great pleasure in reminiscing about dancing at the Ritz Ballroom, going for rides along St. Mary's by the Sea, Asian art, classic films, gold leafing fire trucks, eagles, Manhattan clam chowder, hot dogs with mustard, and a good joke. We will miss his free spirit, kind and generous heart, and cheery smile. "It's a Wonderful World." Ernest is cherished by his family and friends and touched the lives of many.
He is survived by his wife, Irene of 68 years; his children, Christine Cook, Kathy Turner, and her husband, David, and Carol McGuigan, and her husband, Brian; his grandchildren, Kristyn Meyer, Grant Turner, Collin Turner, and Ian McGuigan.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Notre Dame of Easton. Interment will follow with full Military Honors at Lawncroft Cemetery, Fairfield. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Connecticut Food Bank, 2 Research Parkway, Wallingford, CT 06492.
