Obituary of John A Martelli

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

John Martelli left this earth peacefully just before dawn on a snow-stormy day, January 29th 2022. He was 89 years old. A longtime resident of Stamford, CT, John was born in Manhattan, NY, to John and Mary Martelli on April 25, 1932. He grew up working in his father's Italian grocery store in New York City. John graduated from Iona College, the first in his family to earn a college degree. He worked as a buyer and senior project manager and in retirement enjoyed travels to Europe with his wife Bernadette.

John and Bernadette first met at a USO dance in Manhattan. It was the eve of his Army deployment, so they wrote to each other for many months until his return. They married on July 9, 1960 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Astoria, Queens.

John loved spending time at the ocean with his family, training his telescope at the stars, studying history, and listening to opera, classical music and the great scores from 1960's Broadway. He was a die-hard Mets fan and skilled chess player. John was also a famously avid golfer (scoring a hole-in-one) and enjoyed playing tennis with friends.

He is predeceased by his beloved wife Bernadette and is survived by his three loving children: Joan and her husband Jos Flury of Amsterdam, Michelle and her husband Richard McArdle of Fairfield, CT and John and his wife Keiko Martelli of Stamford CT and five grandchildren Lauren and Steven McArdle and Sara, Lisa and Anna Martelli.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 4, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St Leo Parish, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford, CT.  His family will briefly greet friends before leaving the church for a private committal service in Oak Lawn Cemetery, in Fairfield.
