Dear Brother, I love you and will forever miss you. I can neither describe the impact you had on my life, or the person you were, as my words and concepts simply fail what was the lived experience. Though I can never repay my enormous debts of gratitude to you, I will cherish your memory and carry you in my heart. Vale

My memories of Richard go back a long way - from Ballito KZN to Auckland NZ - and all of them are defined by his quiet strength and warmth, intelligence, wit, and humour (often cynical). He was loyal to and deeply protective of both his family and his friends. A more honest, upstanding guy could not be found. We will miss him and the think of him, always. That he is gone is incomprehensible. To Debbie and Richard, Amanda and Bernie and your children, to Christopher, and to Melissa and your children and you family, we are so very sorry for your loss. If ever, and whenever, you need us, we are here for you. Our love, and our condolences to you all, Natalie Moerdyk and Allan Tizzard

Rich, I have so many memories of you.
Playing computer games and learning about IT back in the day to catching some waves at bathers and surfers.
Your wit and sense of humour always made it a pleasure to be around you. You will be sorely missed.
Till we meet again my friend
Condolences to the family. A real tragedy.

Richard was a rare breed. Honest, intelligent, witty, wiry and cheerful. Why we lost contact is a mystery for we shared so many interests. Living two doors down from „Rat“ had its advantages since he could crawl through any burglar bars and get us in if we didn’t have our key and the folks were out. Why we didn’t burgle the neighbourhood is another unanswered mystery. But Richard was too straight up and too interested in the world to demean himself thusly. His sense of humour was timeless and subtle. If I said he was the only Dick I ever knew he would have laughed heartily where others might take offence . I think of him mostly when reading Discworld, a fantasy series he introduced me to back in 1993. I’m still searching for some of the comedic situations he related to me. Like a fallen wizard hanging from the branches of a tall tree waiting for gravity to loose interest. A classic - and possibly of his own invention! We never got in touch after Uni but I feel He lived a life of unrecognised brilliance and burden. I might just be projecting. Here’s to you Richard. You were a fine person and will be sorely missed.

Rick was and remains one of the founding members of an innovation team that looked to utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning for ethical purposes. I had occasion to speak with him 1:1 many times and I got to meet his kids virtually during the pandemic. His pride and joy was rightfully not his work, or his intellect. It was his family and the unmitigated joy they brought him. I recall him sharing beautiful pictures of his children, prominently displaying them at his desk. He also would wait for the perfect time of the year on the perfect clear days just to capture the perfect pictures of the sunset over NYC from the 31St floor. He saw the beauty in small, sometimes insignificant things.
On a personal note, I recall having several deep conversations with him about such philosophical and spiritual things as the origins of man, the impact of technology on society, and the progression of music over the decades. He will certainly be missed, but was (more importantly) loved by many.
Rick! Thanks for all the cool pics, the funny jokes that noone got, and the times we shared as men and fathers wanting to do and be better!! You left a legacy and an impact on so many.

Rich, so many memories out in the water back home. But, most memorable for me, was Feb 1998. Just before we left for NZ. I wasn't at school and I guess you'd finished by then. We had epicccc surf all to ourselves and we paddled from Bathers all the way to Bog. I can still remember the sets feathering on the outer reef. We then paddled all the way over to Sunrise. A part of me is always there on that day with you.
To your family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Love, Gerhard.

It's hard to fathom that this fine young man is gone. He was so loved and adored by all his family, and friends. Our earliest memory of Richard was of a blonde haired boy.......(see photo attached). Our hearts go out to you all: Deb, Richard; Melissa and your two beautiful children; Amanda, Bernard and children; Christopher; and all family and friends not named. Such a great loss. Much love, Merle and Dennis xxx

Sending my love and heartfelt condolences to Richie’s family, friends and loved ones.
I remember sitting next to you on your parent’s driveway in the early 2000’s looking at the stars in the night sky and the lights of Howick village, and feeling like Auckland was a new home and adventure. Down the driveway was a tour through your epically diverse music and movie collection, comedy shows, cooking shows, and world of warcraft (the online game) and Grade-A conversations about everything and anything. That’s the gift of friendship - it cures home sickness. We met through family friends ‘at the other home’ in Ballito, South Africa at a rave music festival in a corn field to celebrate the new millennium, and our friendship spanned these decades and oceanic boundaries. To paraphrase Bill Hicks, one of your all-time favourite comedians: Richie, may you explore space, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

Richard,
Feels like yesterday but over twenty years have passed since we worked together at ANZ in Newmarket.
Fairly obvious back then, that your were far too smart for the place and you moved on to bigger and better things.
After recently connecting on fb I was able to see your love for family, photography and cooking.

I met Richard over Facebookast when he introduced himself as Dean's cousin. He really didn't have to, cause I could see the resemblance. Who I got to know, through Facebook, was a man who loved his family, a man who expressed himself and spoke his mind, no matter what. My deepest condolences to every single one who lost him; as a son, a brother, a husband and a father. Much love.

I met Richard working at ANZ in the early 2000’s. Richard was always really friendly & helpful to me & just an all round great guy. I later went on to meet the rest of his family & it became obvious why Richard was so lovely because all of his family are too. My heart goes out to you all & I am sending lots of love ❤️

I remember taking that picture, when we were doing headshots at the office. Richard and I worked together in the same team for 3 years and we shared the passion for photography. He was a kind person and loved his family and was fond of art. A person with many talent, I am still in a shock, that he is not among us.
You will always be remember my friend. My thoughts and prayers to your family.

I wish I was there to be with you. All of my love to all.
I will never forget you Richard. My bestie, university politics ally and uber intellect, east-side brother and adventure buddy, fellow plant, music, and food lover. I will rebel, sow, shred, and cook on in your memory. I think biltong, shrimp boil and some metal riffs are on the cards for this weekend. Love you forever.
