Obituary of Ellen W Mallett

Please share a memory of Ellen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Ellen W. Mallett, of Trumbull, died on August 21, 2023, after living with glioblastoma for close to five years. She was born August 31, 1951, in Port Chester, NY, to Ruth and Daniel Mallett. She grew up in Mamaroneck, NY, with her siblings, Daniel, Jr., and Barbara.

After earning a degree in elementary education at Central Connecticut State University, Ellen was a teacher before transitioning to her career at Newsweek and Business Week. She raised her family in New Rochelle and Larchmont, NY, before retiring to Asheville, NC. She then returned to the northeast, settling in Connecticut.

Above all, Ellen believed in putting others first. She did it in so many ways, through her sewing and knitting, baking and hosting ginger bread house decorating parties every holiday season.

Once retired, Ellen pursued other ways of giving back, was a Project Linus Chapter Coordinator and held several volunteer positions at local hospitals.

Ellen had a rare quality in that she always made people feel heard, valued and loved. Only someone with Ellen's strength and optimism could handle the many challenges the disease brought with such grace and determination.

Ellen is survived by her husband, Lucien Zarnowski; her daughter, Ashley Dirks, and husband, Matt; and granddaughter, Mila; stepdaughters, Liane Tel and Lisette Coviello (husbands Martijn and Jeff); and step-grandchildren, Sabine, Chloe, Pieter and Luc. She is also survived by her brother and sister.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on October 15th in the theater of the River Valley Retirement Community, 101 Oakview Drive, Trumbull, CT. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the cancer charity of your choice.
