Obituary of Edwin Martin Coe

Please share a memory of Edwin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edwin Martin Coe, age 94, beloved husband of Barbara Malone Coe, of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, passed away on December 16, 2018 in Bridgeport Hospital.

In addition to Barbara, his devoted wife of 67 years, Ed will be lovingly remembered by his family including his children, David Coe and his wife Staci, of Fairfield, Nancy Spray and her husband Scott, of Fairfield, Mary Coe, of Black Rock; his cherished grandchildren, Andrea Spray, Zac Coe, and Dylan Coe;; three sisters-in-law, Sister Nancy Malone, O.S.U., Jane Coe, Liz Coe and his brother-in-law, Stan Francis and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Alice Kehew Coe; and his siblings, Doris Coe Francis, Robert Coe, and Peter Coe.

Raised in Fairfield, Ed graduated from Ludlowe High School in 1942, and studied art at Parsons School of Design. During World War II, Ed served his country in the United States Army, Company C 150th Engineer Combat Battalion. Upon returning home, he met the love of his life, Barbara, on a blind date set up by his sister Doris. They married in September of 1951 and moved back to Black Rock, where they raised their family and established many lifelong friendships. Ed enjoyed a long, successful career in sales for Read's Department Stores in both downtown Bridgeport and Trumbull.

Ed was a humble but talented artist, known to his family and community as soft-spoken and big-hearted, full of love and support for his wife and children, and endlessly doting on his grandchildren. Those fortunate enough to know him well will remember his quick and playful wit, a complement to his love for life’s simplest pleasures, like a summer barbecue or a crisp fall hike.

The Coe family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers Gaye, Robin, Maverley, Shonda and Gina for the companionship and laughter they shared with Ed, especially during this challenging time in his life.
