Kevin Crowell posted a condolence

I took advantage of a then new program offered by DHS to graduate early. To meet state requirements, I had to double up on my least favorite class, gym. My schedule was ridiculous: class, gym, study hall, gym, etc... wash, rinse and repeat. We were allowed 3 absences from class with warning notes after each infraction before a final letter was sent notifying the perpetrator of a failing grade. I skipped a few times with no notes, so I did what any red-blooded student would do. I skipped until I got a note. Unfortunately, those notes were going to my father who was living in Maine at the time and who neglected to tell me of the warnings but who did manage to let me know that I'd failed the class.
After receiving the bad news I threw myself at the mercy of Gerry Coulombe who saw the problem for what it was and offered to intercede on my behalf with the Teutonic Coaches of the Athletic Dept. As fate would have it, the coaches were more than happy to have me suffer at DHS for another year. Gerry held firm and I was allowed to graduate, although for the last 2 months of the school year I had to hit a tennis ball off the side of the gym wall to atone for the sin of skipping gym class. A necessary compromise, I thought.
I'm certain that I wouldn't have tolerated another year of living at home and going to high school and have often said a prayer of thanks for Mr. Coulombe's intercession. Rest in peace, Gerry!

Although I never knew him on a personal level, Mr. Coulombe was our vice principal at Darien High School. Sorry for your loss. Peace

It was indeed a privilege to serve as a teacher and coach during the stewardship of Gerard, while he was the interim principal at Mather Junior High School from 1980 until its closing in 1983.
A kinder, more thoughtful man, would be difficult to find, and his guidance and support will long be remembered. He is with The Lord now,
Au revoir, mon ami, et peut-etre a bientot!

Gerard was a mentor to Blain and an important friend to our family. As newcomers to Port Washington and Schreiber We shared many life experiences with him and his family.
Some favorite memories:
Gerry a big bear of a man hiking through a foot of snow alongside a group of suburban students at the Ashokan Reservoir at the outdoor education program he had created for them to show how nature and poetry connected. And then joining students lying above a beaver dam listening to the sounds.
Gerry's chuckle as he listened to human foibles.
Gerry listening carefully to his students, his peers, his friends.
Gerry reading his poetry aloud to us while enjoying a good piece of beef and a superior glass of wine.
He left a legacy as a teacher, a poet, a husband, father and grandfather.
We miss you Gerry. Love to all the. Coulombes.
