Obituary of Stephen M Apgar

Stephen M. Apgar, 74, of Black Rock, Connecticut passed away on January 7th, 2024 after a hard-fought battle in the hospital. Stephen was born on November 7th, 1949 to Karldon and Madge Apgar in Plainfield, New Jersey. After Stephen graduated from Barrington High School (Illinois), he continued his studies and earned his Bachelor's Degree in history at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. Stephen led a successful career as owner and editor of The Mortgage Journal, a trade and consumer publication dedicated to the dissemination of pertinent and timely mortgage information for the areas of Connecticut & Westchester County, New York. In his most recent chapter, Stephen was able to focus on doing what he loved the most, as Manager of the Weston Gun Club. As an avid clay target shooting enthusiast, hunter, and fisherman, Stephen was also a long-time member of the Fairfield County Fish and Game Club where he not only forged close friendships, but was also able to compete, most notably in his beloved fields of trap and sporting clays, as well as coach youth teams and participate in different activities alongside his family. Stephen was predeceased by his father, Karldon; his mother, Madge; and his nephew, Francis. He is survived by his eldest daughter, Cristina (Barcelona, Spain); his son, Stephen Michael (Fairfield, Connecticut); his youngest daughter, Alexandra (Fairfield, Connecticut); and grand-daughter, Alejandra (Barcelona, Spain). He is also survived by his two brothers, Keith (London, United Kingdom) and Garry (Black Rock, Connecticut); and his nephew, Mathew (Black Rock, Connecticut). Stephen retired in 2022 and enjoyed spending time with his children and their respective partners, whether in their home-state of Connecticut or in Spain, a country he came to love deeply thanks to familial ties and where he formed many friendships and lasting memories. A lover of history and music, avid reader, excellent conversationalist, and bon vivant, Stephen was above all, generous with his friends. Stephen was known to appreciate a good pint of Guinness among friends and family at the Castle and Gaelic American Club in Fairfield, Connecticut. Even in his final days, Stephen was in high spirits as he was surrounded by his children. We know Stephen was an incredible fighter and demonstrated immense strength at the end of his life, but the family finds comfort in knowing that he is now at peace and in a better place. Stephen will be remembered for his exquisite sense of humor, unrelenting joie de vivre and contagious smile. Services will be held at Lesko Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield, Connecticut on January 12th, 2024. Friends and family are welcome to come pay their respects; visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. with a service at 11:30 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at the Gaelic-American Club at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to wfuv.org or support.trcp.org, two organizations we know Stephen would greatly appreciate supporting.
