God's blessings to the McCarthy and Ryan families as you embrace the love John shared with you as husband, father and grandfather.
Doc, fine sir, you no longer require faith or hope; as you have seen the face of Our Savior. Rest in God's love and peace.

I echo many of the same thoughts that my brother, Phil, posted earlier to these tributes, even though I graduated from Fairfield in 1976, six years later. Still, I was there for many of his memories and acquired many of my own starting as a sixth grader, attending the first Fairfield hockey games. Later, I had the good fortune to have the opportunity to play some hockey for Fairfield myself. I will always remember Doc as a unique coach, a motivational coach, and not only a dedicated one, but someone who represented the heart and soul of Fairfield Hockey like no one else. My most sincere condolences. He will not be forgotten.

Dr. McCarthy was my first mentor and I wouldn’t be where I am now as a clinical psychologist without him. Good mentors are hard to come by, and he was truly special and the best. Dr. McCarthy’s honesty, non nonjudgemental style, and whit are unmatched. “Everything works for someone, somewhere, sometime.” I vividly remember my first class with him and then I took every class he taught and spent hours picking his brain on how to pursue a career in psychology. I followed his advice and it served me well. May he rest in peace and may his memory continue to be a blessing to us all.

Blessings to all who knew and loved "Doc". I met John in 1982 when pairing student advisors with faculty and became fast friends over our joint love of hockey. We continued our friendship as club coaches and succeeded in bringing our programs to varsity status.
Over the years, whether at the lunch table or a quick walk across campus, we were never at a loss for a wonderful chat.
His legacy will live on so beautifully through family, students, athletes and friends.

I am so sad to hear this news. I had been trying to get in touch the past month or so with John because it was 2 or 3 years since we last talked and the # I had no longer worked. His impact on our students and on our colleagues was enormous. He stills comes up in conversation in the Psych dept at Fairfield! He meant a lot to me and I will miss him. My sincere condolences to Betsy and to all his kids and grandkids -- I know how much he loved you all Linda Henkel
