Our condolences to the Barrett and Chavez Family, May God bless all. Vinny was a very hard worker who was a wonderful role model for his family and children. Vinny made so many memories for his children and grandchildren to share with Maria over the years. Continue to share and spread these memories to the extended family members. From meeting Vinny and Maria in elementary school right through high school the special love continued to grow day by day. Vinny God called you home at such a young age but now you will watch over Maria and the rest of the family from above and pain free.

I’ll always remember Vinny as the high school sweetheart of Maria, the first friend I made in 7th grade. It makes me happy to see that their love stayed alive for so many years. This great man will be missed, but love never ends. My deepest condolences are with this family. Rest in peace Vinny. I love you Maria. Please feel my big hug around you right now. I will see you soon my friend and will deliver the hug in person.

Dear Uncle Vinny,
I wanted to write this to you because, as you probably understand for me being the son of Juan Carlos Chavez, it is hard to be open with my emotions without completely losing it. And growing up in the very manly family that we did, with father figures like my Father, Uncle Dave, Uncle Hector and José, it’s not easy to broach these topics in person, especially with you being unable to verbalize a response due to your condition now. So, I figured it’s probably better to get it all down in writing.
With that said, I mentioned those few father figures above, but I left a major one out, and that man is you. I’m sure you remember me sleeping over almost every weekend for several years when I was a boy to hang out with Dan, with you guys feeding me, and taking me to Dan’s baseball games and everything. Those were very good times for me, and I gotta say that the way you took care of your family, remained patient and caring even when Dan was frequently an asshole (haha) when he was younger, and were always ready to bring your boy to his ball games and take care of the extra curricular needs of your children on top of all the work you did was truly an example to me and I won’t forget it.
You’ve always been one of my favorite Uncles, like a 2nd father to me, and you and Aunt Maria’s family like my second family. You were always happy to see us and share some jokes, always kind and generous. Always honestly interested in our lives and how we were doing. There’s honestly nothing bad I can say about you, which makes it even harder to conceive of the great misfortune of your ALS diagnosis and what it has taken away from you physically. I can tell you we all (incl. My brothers, parents and our extended family) deeply miss being able to converse with you freely and hear your wise-cracks, but we all try to hold it together and keep the parties, our ever more rare times together as we grow older and busier with family life (or my life in NYC) as our big extended family, as joyous as possible.
That said, It is important now to count your blessings and be grateful for them. You got to meet Dan’s long-awaited, beautiful baby boy Braydan, and you have so many wonderful and loved children and grand-children, and a loving, devoted wife. And they have a good, loving extended family that will always look out for them, and I’m sure they for all of us. As will our children’s children, because that’s what we will teach them to do. We’ll always be there for each other.
If there is a God that helps determine, at least, our biological destinies, it seems to me that you were chosen for this heavy physical burden because you are the best of us: A truly good, honorable gentleman, father and grandfather. A man who has the dignity and ironclad fortitude to endure any hardship willingly, with grace, without showing self-pity, but instead showing us how to deal with intense misfortune stoically. You are truly an example to us all, because I don’t think any of us could have gone through what you have as gracefully as you. Like Christ on the cross, only you could bear this burden in such an exemplary, graceful fashion. Throughout your life, you have shown us all how a real man behaves, and it’s an example that will never be forgotten by any of us. Your reputation is deservedly unblemished, and your honor universally recognized by your family and community because of this.
We love you very much, Uncle Vinny. Always have and always will. And love survives all dimensions, any timespan. It is divine and immutable. Love is the very essence of the Lord, and how we know he is real and with us. It is as immortal as our souls. Inextinguishable as the hottest fires that once burned inside of us during the most passionate moments of our youth. There is no end to us, and love will always bring us together. We will all be together again, as we once were in a distant past. A new adventure awaits all of us. One of pure peace and tranquility. No more suffering, no more concerns, nothing to worry about. A calm unlike anything we’ve ever experienced during our lives.
Fear not, Uncle Vinny. We’ll all be here for each other. And we’ll all be together again.
Love Always, Your Nephew,
Nick Chavez
