Obituary
Obituary of Harry C. Laurie
Please share a memory of Harry to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Harry C. Laurie, 74, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 4, 2021. The son of Mary Cronin and Harry Laurie, he was a life-long resident of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport. Harry leaves behind numerous cousins (many in Ireland) and friends who were touched by his thoughtful and out-going spirit. For many newcomers to Black Rock, Harry was their first friend. He loved to bring people together and show them his community.
Harry, who worked for UPS for many years, continued with his “deliveries” long after retirement. Once he knew your interests, you could expect to find a book, music CD or movie DVD at your doorstep. His own wide-ranging interests focused primarily on the arts. His personal collection of paintings included works from Picasso to Warhol as well as from many local artists. Harry visited art museum throughout Europe and frequented local art shows, galleries, and open studios.
Self-described as “a hippy without the drugs,” Harry was a Vietnam War objector and an alumnus of the original Woodstock (even appearing on the centerfold of the Woodstock album). He was a consummate storyteller and always had a joke at the ready. Harry enjoyed music, especially Bob Dylan, was an avid reader of books, and loved everything Irish. In his later years, he became a certified hypnotist to help friends and acquaintances overcome addictions, such as smoking.
Harry attended the Saint Ann School in Black Rock and Notre Dame Catholic High School in Fairfield. He was a long-time member of Fairfield’s Gaelic-American Club, Black Rock’s Fayerweather Yacht Club, and the National Guild of Hypnotists. He was also one of the original members of St. Ann;s Drum and Bugle Corps (the Loyalaires).
Harry will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
