John was a mensch long before he even heard the word. When i met him. He was just a kid but a kid with heart and soul and integrity beyond his years. His zest for life was contagious. He easily slid into the role of Uncle John and was always open for a good game of bull and devil with our toddler. Whenever we all found ourselves at the Salek at home in wyckoff. He helped teach Jennifer the value of competitive play. It was impossible to ignore the juxtaposition of the 19-in neck football captain rolling around on the floor with the little 2-year-old girl with a gentility. He never dared display in the tangle of Salek Brothers. He raised the bar in every arena he chose to grace. Well played, John. Heaven has surely welcomed you with open arms
"AND THE CROWD GOES WILD!!!"
Love to all my Saleks
Consider yourselves hugged from afar. Cyndy

I was saddened to hear of John's passing. John possessed innumerable positive qualities, but the quality for which I knew him best was his unwavering support of his son's and daughter's sports participation. As one of Michael's high school basketball coaches, I could always count on John's presence at all home and away games. At the conclusion of games, John would have an insightful comment about the team's performance but never focused exclusively on Michael's game. He would always point out, in a most positive way, the team's strengths and would add how much he enjoyed watching them play. For many years after Michael graduated, he attended games and always made a point of saying hello to me and wishing us good luck. I could not agree more with the quote in the obituary, "He was truly one of the good guys."

Moving to New Jersey for my senior year of high school was hard. John and along with a lot of the football players made the transition easier. I know he made a lot of key blocks for me that helped me have a very good season. The move to Jersey changed my life with the scholarship offer to Clemson. John and I along with Paul Mann would meet at my house in the summers and lift weights and enjoy a beverage with my dad. I think he was part of the card games at Bill Shelly"s. We remained friends after that with several emails during football season. He was a great guy, that will surly be missed. John Rhodes

John was in my HS class 1969 , Ramapo. He was tall , smart in class, an excellent athlete, and was always in a friendly mood. He talked to me, even though he hardly knew me from Wyckoff schools. When he walked the halls , he was hard to miss. You could tell he was admired . Yes, one of the good guys. Condolences to his wife and family . I have family buried in Connecticut. He will be in gentle company. Meg Roll Leister
