Dad you remain with me and I am only beginning to come to terms with having lost contact with you in a sense, with your recent passing. Sometimes i wish that things could have been different. We lived through some challenging times in the world. Things were changing rapidly and I'm afraid that there were some things that we were challenged to see from the perspectives of each others' eyes and experiences. I have the flag that was given to us for your funeral by the government through your service to our country, and will display it proudly once I determine the most appropriate manner in which to do so.

I will remember my father as a man who valued peaceful and quiet moments with family, friends, or by himself. He was a keen observer of the natural world. He appreciated beautiful places and placed a very high value on preserving them for all to appreciate. A tireless worker Dad believed in following anything he started through to completion, and in doing things correctly without cutting any corners or lowering his standards half way through. Our times together sailing and fishing out of Pequot on Long Island Sound are now memories that I can retain and hold closely. Sometimes he would dig down deep to find the energy to take us skiing at Mohawk, in the Berkshires of Massachusetts or in Vermont on weekends but he knew that I in particular loved it. He made enormous sacrifices of all sorts that continue to make my life especially enjoyable and serene each day as I look out at the mountains well to the north of where our family took root in Weston. Mom called me the other evening and mentioned that the northern lights would be visible in a few more hours throughout the northeast. When I went outside at around ten pm I meditated and felt a deep surge of appreciation for my father and our shared life. Looking up at the green lights in the sky I could hear Dad say "Bill just enjoy this!"
